Shasr (Ubar) area
Shasr is located to the northwest of the city of Thumrait and is approximately 165 kilometers away from Salalah. Researchers consider it the largest gathering point for trade caravans heading to the Mesopotamian civilization through the Empty Quarter. Coins dating back to 600 BCE have been discovered there, and the site is estimated to be 18,000 years old. In 1992, the remnants of the city of Ubar were announced to be discovered by an American archaeological mission led by Professor Zarins. This city was mentioned by Ptolemy in the 1st century AD and Marco Polo in the 12th century AD. The archaeological remains of the Al-Shasr (Ubar) area represent one of the important historical landmarks in the Dhofar Governorate and a major tourist destination for enthusiasts interested in exploring archaeological sites and historical locations. The Al-Shasr (Ubar) area has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
